Information

What is Surgical Dentistry?

Surgical dentistry covers a range of procedures that go beyond routine dental care, including tooth extractions, wisdom tooth removal, and other minor oral surgical treatments. At Smiles Dental Care, we perform these procedures with precision and care — making sure you feel informed, comfortable, and well supported throughout.

What surgical procedures do you perform?

We offer simple and surgical extractions, wisdom tooth removal, and other minor oral surgery. For complex cases requiring a specialist, we will provide a trusted referral.

Extraction is considered when a tooth is too damaged or decayed to save, is causing overcrowding, is impacted (like wisdom teeth), or poses a risk to surrounding teeth and structures.

Recovery varies by procedure. Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort for a few days. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and are available if you have any concerns during your recovery.

Common Questions

We're Here to Answer Your Questions

New to Smiles Dental Care, or just a little nervous? Here are some
questions our patients ask most often.

Will I be awake during a surgical extraction?

Yes, surgical procedures are performed under local anaesthetic — you’ll be awake but completely numb. Sedation options are also available for anxious patients.

Wisdom teeth are usually removed when they are impacted (unable to fully erupt), causing pain or infection, damaging adjacent teeth, or creating hygiene problems. Not all wisdom teeth need removal — we’ll advise based on x-rays.

The initial healing of the gum typically takes 1–2 weeks. Complete bone healing takes longer, but most patients feel comfortable within a few days.

Soft foods like yoghurt, soup, mashed potato, and smoothies are recommended for the first few days. We’ll give you a full list of foods to enjoy and avoid.

Please let us know — we have sedation options available and our team is experienced in supporting anxious patients. We’ll go at your pace and make sure you’re comfortable before we start.
