Information

What is Emergency Dentistry?

Dental emergencies can happen at any time — a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, or a lost filling. At Smiles Dental Care, we prioritise same-day emergency appointments to help get you the care you need as quickly as possible.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation causing severe pain, swelling, bleeding, or trauma to your teeth or mouth. This includes: severe toothache, chipped or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses, and facial swelling.

Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to reinsert it into the socket or keep it in milk. Call us immediately — time is critical for saving a knocked-out tooth.

Yes. We do our best to see emergency patients on the same day they call. Please phone us first thing in the morning and we will do everything we can to fit you in.

Common Questions

We're Here to Answer Your Questions

New to Smiles Dental Care, or just a little nervous? Here are some
questions our patients ask most often.

How quickly can I be seen for a dental emergency?
We aim to see emergency patients the same day they call. Please phone us as early as possible — we hold appointment times specifically for urgent cases.
Over-the-counter pain relief (such as ibuprofen or paracetamol) can help manage pain temporarily. Avoid very hot, cold, or sweet foods and call us as soon as we open.
Keep any broken pieces if possible, rinse your mouth gently with warm water, and call us immediately. We’ll assess whether the tooth can be restored or needs other treatment.
A lost filling should be seen promptly as the exposed tooth is vulnerable to pain, infection, and further damage. Call us and we’ll fit you in as soon as possible.

Emergency consultations are billed at our standard consultation rate. We’ll always explain costs before proceeding with any treatment beyond the initial assessment.
