Information

What is paediatric dentistry?

Paediatric dentistry is dedicated to caring for children’s teeth, gums, and overall oral health from infancy through the teenage years. At Smiles Dental Care, we foster a calm, welcoming, and child-friendly environment where kids feel at ease — encouraging healthy smiles and lifelong dental habits.

When should my child come in and see the dentist?

We recommend bringing your child in when their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday — whichever comes first. Early visits help your child get comfortable with the dental environment and allow us to monitor their development from the start. Regular check-ups also give us the chance to provide guidance on brushing, diet, and healthy habits as your child grows.

It’s completely normal for children to feel restless or nervous during dental visits, especially when it’s something new to them. Our team is experienced in working with children of all ages and uses gentle, patient approaches to help them feel comfortable and relaxed. We take the time to build trust, move at your child’s pace, and create a positive experience at every visit.

Yes — dental X-rays for children involve very low levels of radiation, and we use modern digital X-ray technology to minimise exposure further. X-rays are only recommended when clinically necessary to help us monitor your child’s oral health and development.

Why Patients Choose paediatric dentistry

Starting dental care early gives your child the best foundation for healthy teeth and positive dental habits throughout their life.

Gentle and Child Friendly

Our team is dedicated to helping children feel comfortable and relaxed during every visit. Using a gentle, friendly approach and reassuring communication, we create positive dental experiences that help build confidence and trust over time.

Early Prevention

Catching issues early in childhood — like crowding, decay, or bite problems — means simpler, less invasive treatment now and fewer problems later.

Teaching Great Habits

We take the time to educate both children and parents on brushing, flossing, and diet — setting kids up with healthy habits that last a lifetime.

The Whole Family Welcome

Bring the whole family in one go. We love treating multiple generations and making dental care a normal, positive part of family life.

Common Questions

We're Here to Answer Your Questions

New to Smiles Dental Care, or just a little nervous? Here are some
questions our patients ask most often.

Can I take a photo?

Absolutely — parents are welcome to take photos during their child’s visit. We love celebrating positive dental experiences and special milestones along the way. We simply ask that photos are taken respectfully and do not disrupt treatment or other patients.

This is very common and we’re well prepared for it! We take things at your child’s pace and never rush. Our team has a lot of experience making nervous little patients feel safe and comfortable.

Every six months is generally recommended for most children. As children’s teeth change quickly, regular visits allow us to monitor development and address any concerns early. Your dentist may suggest more or less frequent visits depending on your child’s individual needs.

Yes, fluoride treatments and fissure sealants are safe, effective preventive tools we recommend for eligible children. We’ll discuss what’s appropriate for your child at their visit.

Yes, we accept the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule, which provides eligible children with up to $1,095 in dental benefits over two calendar years.
